Why We Are Forming a Movement

Public discourse is broken to a point where it threatens the health of our democracy and society.   We aspire to live in a society that values the free, respectful exchange of ideas and disagreement.

Our Vision

A large and growing core of citizens who embrace the critical importance of healthy discourse, and model behaviors that reinforce mutual respect and trust.

Our Commitments

We commit:

  • To influence our discourse for the better, and not to watch passively as it worsens.
  • To think independently, rather than surrender the dignity of our own minds to those who hope to make us angry or suspicious of others.
  • To treat others who disagree with us with respect.
  • To model this behavior for others, so that we improve the quality of our public discourse.

“What’s in it for me?”

These choices I make for my own wellbeing:

  • I am happier, healthier, and more productive if I choose not to live in a world of enemies.
  • My example and encouragement may influence friends and loved ones.
  • As growing numbers of people make the same choices, we can slowly but continuously restore health to how we talk to each other.
  • These choices, if adopted by enough people over time, can encourage educators to promote diversity of viewpoints in the classroom and on campus, the media to present fairly different points of view, and political candidates to engage with rising levels of intellectual honesty over dogma and personal destruction.
  • All for a more secure and functional republic, and a more humane civilization.

If we are going to restore the fabric of our frayed society, we have to recommit ourselves to civil discourse. This new movement begins with each of us.
